David Matthew Murphy (born October 18, 1981, in Houston, Texas) is a former American professional baseball outfielder. He was drafted in the 1st round of the 2003 draft by the Boston Red Sox, out of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He was a 21-year-old outfielder when drafted.
Murphy has played for the Single A Lowell Spinners, the Single A Sarasota Red Sox, the rookie-level Gulf Coast Red Sox, Double A Portland Sea Dogs, the AFL Peoria Saguaros, and the Triple A Pawtucket Red Sox.[1]
In 2006, Murphy played 42 games for the Sea Dogs before being promoted to Pawtucket on May 26. While at Portland, Murphy had 47 hits in 172 at-bats (.273 AVG), with 17 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 25 RBI, and 11 walks. Through August 8 with Pawtucket, David has appeared in 66 games, going 69-for-249 (.277 AVG), with 19 doubles, 5 triples, 7 home runs, 38 RBI, and 39 walks. Comparing his stats from Portland to Pawtucket, David has improved his OBP from .315 to .371.[2] In 2006 he appeared in 20 games for the Boston Red Sox.
On July 31, 2007, Murphy was traded to the Texas Rangers in a deal that brought relief pitcher Eric Gagné to Boston.

Early career
- Hit a 1-2 pitch into center field at Fenway Park in his first Major-League at-bat for his first Major-League hit (a single) on September 2, 2006. The next batter (Coco Crisp) hit into a double play. He wore #60 and played right-field, batting ninth.
- Hit first MLB home run against New York Yankees pitcher Jaret Wright on September 17, 2006 at Yankee Stadium.
- Played high school ball with Cleveland Indians second baseman Josh Barfield.
Murphy had been playing right field for the Texas Rangers until Marlon Byrd returns. He is now playing more left field. Through May 30, 2008, Murphy is hitting .288 with 29 runs, 19 doubles, six home runs and 36 RBI. [3]
On April 25, 2008, the Rangers beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 on Murphy's game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. It was Murphy's first game-ending hit.
On August 1, 2008, Murphy capped a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 9th, hitting a game-winning 2-RBI single off of B.J. Ryan as the Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-8.
